Description:
Key Purpose

The Technology Leadership research study started in late 2006 to determine the real challenges and opportunities faced by Chief Information Officers (CIO), Chief Technology Officers (CTO) and the senior managers in the technology delivery organization. By “real” we mean the real personal and professional challenges faced by technology leaders.
We started looking at the priorities and challenges of the technology leader, in most cases referring to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO), to get an understanding of the real pressures and experiences encountered. There are many studies released yearly based on research findings that vary greatly in content and stature. Some of the more prominent studies include; the “State of the CIO” annual research done by CIO magazine, Gartner’s ongoing surveys of CIO agendas, Forrester Research, CEB, and a number of others.
The thing that bugs me the most is that all these studies profess to have large sample sizes across many industries. But, the problem is that the outcomes are too generic for a particular industry or company to use in their decision making processes.
There is definitely merit in reasoning that the challenges encountered are universal across many industries and geographies. Our opinion is that some of the key messages are diluted if these studies focus on large sample sizes. This meant that we set the context for first tier banks per geography to ensure that our comparisons and findings are relevant to the players in that context.

Key Questions Answered

Without exposing the entire list of items covered by the Technology Leadership Study questionnaire, some might be extracted to provide the reader with a rough idea of the information covered:
1. What are the real personal challenges technology leaders face?
2. Are priority cycles affecting your efficiencies?
3. What is the total annual budget?
4. What are the key career drivers for the CIO?
5. How important is the role of the CIO to business success?
6. What are the concerns with sourcing?
7. Can SA be a successful destination for off shoring?
8. What can be done to alleviate the pressures of the traditional budget cycle?

Methodology

The Systemiclogic research process allows for the analysts to conduct pre-studies required for identifying the key research focus areas for our clients. These factors are then explored using the most relevant research designs applicable. The data collection methodologies are approached in the same way and coupled with data validation and reliability procedures to ensure an outcome that is not merely tailored to our client’s needs, but adhering to high research standards.

Findings

The output will be presented in the form of a research report and presentation with the following 6 focus areas:
1. Personal Challenges and Career orientation
2. Skilling, Staffing and Sourcing
3. Budget and Financial Issues
4. Planning and management issues
5. Managing the old and managing the new
6. The Role of transformation
